I craft the image from everything beautiful that is magically woven from the air, light, texture and shape. Oil painting fascinates me as the possibility to fix the moment of aesthetic experience, the moment that I can share with my spectators; as an attempt to express myself on what I love and what is dear for me.
Church painting
In church painting I am not interested in stylization and synthesizing. My mission is to maintain the style and spirit of the school tradition. I want the painting and the church interior to agree with the venue and its history, not to bring about personal taste and discord into its space but to create art that historically matches its surroundings.
In many cases a church is not a newly-built one, but restored from ruin, which walls should be treated with due respect...
Icons
While writing an icon, apart from the spiritual and technical component, it is very important for me to preserve historicism and continuity of the Russian iconography tradition of XVII century. I am fascinated with Yaroslavl, Romanov and old believers’ icon writing styles of XVII-XIX centuries, in short, with all that highlights the national flavour and nature of the Byzantine iconography.
The ancient russian costume
I have developed a real passion for the history of the Russian folk costume since I was a child. Today I have a vast collection of antique peasant and merchant clothing, headdresses, jewellery, festival dresses. They all come from the areas through which the overland route from Moscow to the Russian North used to run and which have miraculously preserved the footprint of old Russian boyar’s life.
